GLIMPSE OF ACTIVITIES

Over and above creating conducive atmosphere in its operational areas, KAS Foundation since its very fledging state ( 2003), has been very catalyst in true development spirit that has virtually invited attention of different stakeholders, grass roots level supporters, contemporary NGOs  and  even Government agencies.  It has developed a demonstrative background for its action-learning process ensuring participatory model of people-centered wholesome development.

Major activities undertaken during the year under reference can broadly be summed up under following major heads such as 1) Women Empowerment 2) Environment Protection 3)Community Health Management 4) Child Support Service 5) Youth Promotion             6) Community Organization  7)Social Cohesion and National Integration 8) Service in the Temple of Lord Jagannath and 9) Miscellaneous Activities which include various awareness generation and community mobilization activities that has direct impact on the beneficiaries and other stakeholders.

Over and above these, a good variety of miscellaneous activities like PRI empowerment, Community Awareness Generation, Investors Awareness Campaign etc also been undertaken that had vital impact of ensuring integration among all activities starting from inception till completion.

Remarkably, the Animal Welfare Activities, Youth Mobilization  and Community Awareness Generation on Sanitation, Health, Family Welfare, Investment etc. has brought some  eye-catching effect on public. KAS Foundation intends to accelerate action on those aspects in further years through concerted effort. 

SEVA AT JAGANNATH TEMPLE

There is a saying that “Service to mankind is service to God” Accordingly, KAS has continued  the cleaning work of the Anand Bazar in Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri which was started since May 2006 as a voluntary service. 22 youngsters are cleaning the sacred place where pilgrims sit and eat the Maha prasad of the Lord through out day and night. The service is very well appreciated by the temple authorities, the traders operating in the Bazar and lakhs and lakhs of pilgrims coming to the temple all over the year.  

 

HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAMMES:

KAS in collaboration with REACH INDIA, LEPRA Health in Action, District Tuberculosis Society, Malaria Deptt. And State AIDS Cell rendering unabated health awareness, preventive health care awareness ,advocacy ,communication and education programs etc in different  part of its operational areas to reduce health related vulnerability of the community people through out the year .

During the year under reference, number of awareness generation and community mobilization activities has been undertaken in different parts of Orissa including Bhubaneswar City. This year another important dimension was added, when FFH (Freedom From Hunger) a Davis, USA  based renowned organization offered an opportunity to work on Health Protection  .

Dr. Dutta  Regional Manager, FFH  Kolkatta   visited Bhubaneswar and discussed on the subject . RCH and MCH with special reference to Micro Finance And Health Protection activities was decided to be taken up with major thrust on deprived and disadvantaged people. An integrated approach for community health management was also decided.

MICRO INSURANCE SURVEY

A micro insurance survey was conducted under the guidance of MICRO INSURANCE ACADEMY, New Delhi during this year. A month long micro insurance survey activities were undertaken in collaboration with MULTI APPLIANCE SYSTEMS, Bhubaneswar in this context. The required data were collected from three assigned districts i.e. Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Khurda engaging 100 KAS staff. 20 competent MIS personnel from different operational areas worked on these data for around three weeks to do check, recheck and final compilation. Complied data were subsequently forwarded to MICRO INSURANCE ACADEMY, New Delhi. That organization expressed complete satisfaction over the handling the job in true professional manner

TRAINING OF FIELD STAFF
 
Over the years, capacity building or staff and mobilization of communities have become a regular task all along being a part of its development perspective over the years. In regular intervals – subject specific trainings are undertaken by organization and staff are inspired and given proper opportunity to have exposure through attending training and exposures in other organizations in different part of Orissa and outside Orissa.

In fact, two numbers of two days training programme were organized during the year to provide training to the field staff, supervisors for their capacity building and reinforcement analysis on various subjects dealt by them. The service and resource support extended by District Tuberculosis Officer, Capital Hospital on RNTCP Policies and TB control was quite inspiring and memorable on the part of participants. Some of the staff members also have attended LEPRA supported training programmes at Bhubaneswar this year.

After training – the staff did had the chance to interact with grass roots level health service providers including Quacks and local level health workers regarding the service provisions, lacunae and improve in response and demand by the stakeholders over the period.

AMBULANCE SERVICE

KAS has dedicated two ambulances to provide medical emergency services in un-divided Koraput district especially for services of tribal people with BPL Card holder and other poor people of the area at highly subsidies rate. Hon’ble MP Pyari Mohan Mahapatra and Hon’ble MP Mr. Mohan Jena flaged off the ambulances on Republic Day 2009.These ambulances have now become a part of every day emergency health care service to the resource poor people. This also helps providing “on the spot” health camps in the hard to reach and inaccessible areas of that tribal dominated areas of Koraput.

DRUG DE-ADDICTION

KAS continues to provide financial support on a monthly basis to SAHARA – a drug addict treatment center at Bhubaneswar in BJB Nagar Bhubaneswar towards food and medicine expenses of some of the drug addicts (especially ganja addicts) who come to Sahara for rehabilitation.

In fact, over the years, the support of KAS has not only developed a sense of responsibility among the inmates but also have prompted a number of local volunteers including members from Mass Media to have attention towards them and enable them act to join the mainstream of society. Needless to say – in this regard, the support and cooperation of CYSD Staff as well as some of the inmates in counseling the addicts is quite inspiring and commendable that makes KAS feel – “the efforts do have some positive results and will certainly have definite results in future”.

CRECHE FOR TRIBAL CHILDREN

KAS Foundation, now sponsors a Creche at Haridaspur, Jajpur. In fact, Seva Samiti, a well known development organization set up in November 1959 by Late Rambha Devi, a renowned Social Worker and staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi who intend to work for the upliftment of tribal households of tribal households had started running that crèche at Haridaspur. The inmates and their family members are too poor to afford the daily needs. The Seva Samiti has been managing a Creche centre there where the Tribal women are going to near by jungles and working places for collection of MFPs or for wage earning. Due to financial crunch, Seva Samiti is now unable to maintain that Creche in a fair manner paying proper heed to all children in due manner.

 

KAS Foundation has now adopted the Creche and started taking care of the 25 children who depend on the Creche. KAS is providing financial as well as human resources support for the smooth functioning of the Creche. The children get quality food in the morning and afternoon. At the same time KAS opened its Branch to provide financial services to the poor tribal women of Haridaspur area.

FIRST-AID AND WATER DISTRIBUTION CENTRE

Over the year – the organization has been engaged in a number of development works over and above the benevolent tasks that directly ensures benefit to the people but also promotes an environment of humanitarian values. In fact, despite development perspective, the organization has never forgotten its humanitarian spirit of service to the needy and hence joining hand with AG Ambulance Division, a First-Aid and Water Distribution centre at AG Squre Bhubaneswar was sponsored by KAS during this year.

Throughout the summer season arrangement was made to provide cool water for the people and extend first-aid facilities. It was a support service to the public to cope up the menace of Sun Stroke caused due to heat wave and extreme heat during Summer days. This has virtually inspired a lot of youngsters and other organizations to start this sort of service in other different parts of the city.  

CONSUMER AWARENESS PROGRAMME

For 2 days i.e. on 4th and 5th of March 2009  a Consumer Awareness Camp was arranged at Jeypore. Sarpanch Mr. K.C.Mallick and Supply Inspector Mr. Satyabhama Dash and Advocate Mr. Chidananda Nayak had been the resource persons in this event. Matters concerning to Consumer Awareness Act, Duties and Responsibilities of a Good Consumer, Authorities and Methods of Redressal of Griveances of Consumers etc. were discussed in detail there. 

  

TOT PROGRAMME ON MALARIA

KAS Foundation arranged a three days TOT programme on Malaria on 13 to 16 March 2009 at OVHA Conference hall. Twenty in house participants from different Malaria prone districts of the state like Kalahandi, Nuapada, Berhampur, Jeypur, Keonjhar, Baripada, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh and Khurda branches participated the training programme actively. Training was conducted by eminent resource person           Mr. S. Nigam and his colleagues of REACH INDIA 

 

 

SUPPORT TO ORISSA BLIND ASSOCIATION

This year, study materials, dresses and equipments were given to the children in the blind school managed by the Orissa Blind Association. Though 5000 blind people live in Orissa, as per the estimate of the above Association, they are not able to get books or printing materials in Braille form to empower them with required knowledge to manage them, as there is no Braille press. Hence the Directors had purchased and donated a Braille Printing Machine at a cost of Rs. 3.50 lakhs on 3rd of December 3, 2007, which is well maintained by the Orissa Blind Association under the name and style of KAS Foundation Braille Press. This machine has meanwhile enabled education process more congenial for blind students & has by the way ensured better environment for the needy blind children there.

FLOOD RELIEF IN JAGATSINGHPUR

KAS foundation has extended relief and rescue support to the flood victims of Erasama and Kujanga block areas during this year. It could reach to the remote villages especially in hard to reach areas for providing medicines and first aid items during the prime stage. It could provide support to victims to meet their standing needs like food and medicine during that period and ultimately consulted district administration and NGO network for augmenting the process of rehabilitation for the worst affected victims immediately.
